Keep a lookout for the Asian Longhorned Beetle!
It's scary news that this destructive beetle has been found in the Worcester, MA area. Be on the lookout in your yard for these huge beetles! They feed on a variety of hardwood trees, Maples being one of the many. For more info, how to identify them and figure out if they are in trees in your yard, check out these links: UVM, Foster's article and the latest article in Foster's (Oct. 13, 08).

Notes from the garden...
I am sending out a request for a volunteers for this coming Saturday the 30th... Sugar & Ice Creamery, will be having live music and other happenings from 4pm–7pm and has invited us to join in the festivities. We will be setting up a small table there for people to find out about us. Since it is only for 3 hours I thought volunteers could be present for half hour/hour increments. Please let me know if you are interested!
As you probably have seen, the structure of the "town garden" is complete and is ready for us to plant!
We will be planting on Saturday Sept. 6 at 9:30am and if we need to, Sept. 7. (This will happen in any weather, except soaking rain, windy/rainy conditions.)
On Friday, Sept. 5 between 5:00pm and 7:00pm we will be prepping the garden--weeding--and will be accepting plant donations at the parking lot closest to the garden (across from the Park and Ride, and on the same side as Calef's). If you would like to drop off donations before then, let me know and I will let you know where they can be dropped off.
We are looking for these plants: (if you are donating, please remove weeds and any other unknown plants from the clumps/pots--thanks!)
daisies
bee balm
false sunflower (helianthus)
Sedum-- autumn joy or similar
variegated hosta
coneflowers/echinacea
Astilbe
Dianthus
Sweet William
Lupine
Lavender
moss phlox
hens & chicks
We are figuring to have not more than 10-12 people on the day of planting as it will get crowded with all that will be going on. Jobs that will be available are, but not limited to... watering, mulching, planting, carrying plants and ????.
If you would be interested and available to help on Friday evening or Saturday, please let me know by emailing kanscho[!a]metrocast[!dot]net or calling Nancy.
Our next meeting is September 17th at the Barrington Town Library at 6:30pm. This will be a general business meeting, make plans/brainstorm for programs/speakers for the upcoming year, updates about the town garden, etc. Dues ($20 per person/family, good for Sept. 2008 through August 2009) will be collected. If you have seeds (or plants) to share, bring them along for a swap!

August Fieldtrip and upcoming meetings
The town garden is coming along. The construction of it should be completed within the next 2 weeks. At this point we are unsure of when we will plant up the garden. I am guessing around the very end of August or the beginning of Sept. I'll be sure to let everyone know when it is time for plant donations : )
Our next "meeting" is a fieldtrip to WillowMist Grasses in Stratham. Wednesday, August 20. We will meet at the town library at 5:30pm to carpool (or meet at the nursery at 6:00pm). If you would like to attend please send an email to kanscho{at}metrocast{dot}net and if you want to carpool please let me know as well (so we don't leave without you). For more info about WillowMist Grasses see their web site: http://www.willowmist.com/
Regular meetings begin in September at the Barrington Town Library. The first meeting of the "new year" is September 17 at 6:30pm. This will be a general business meeting, make plans/brainstorm for programs/speakers for the upcoming year, updates about the town garden, etc.
I would like to hold another Hypertufa workshop sometime in late September or early October-- perfect timing for making gifts for the holidays. Let me know if you are interested and which Saturday morning works for you. I am thinking of Sept. 27 or Oct. 11.
We will start to collect the dues for the new year-- $20 per person/family.
If you have seeds (or plants) to share, bring them along for a swap!
Barrington Town Library Gardens... help is needed! The budget for taking care of the gardens has been reduced and Jenny has asked if we could keep an eye on the gardens. If anyone has some time to deadhead, prune and just help cleanup the gardens that would be great! If you know when you might be going I can check with Jenny to see what is on the list to be done.
