Our History

The Barrington Bloomers Garden Club was founded in June of 2007 by Nancy Kanner. The group has adopted the mission “Keeping Barrington Beautiful.” Meetings are held throughout the year on the third Wednesday of each month, from September through July, and are usually held at the Barrington Town Library. Our website has information about our upcoming meetings and field trips, notes from previous meetings as well as photos and links to gardening related websites. Yearly dues are $10 for the year (Sept through July, there is no meeting in August). Non-members can pay a drop-in fee for meetings with speakers or field trips. The money from dues and drop-in fees goes towards the speakers/and or field trip fees. Membership is always open- anyone is welcome to join.

In 2008 the Town Flower Garden at the intersection of Routes 125 & 9 was designed by members of the Barrington Bloomers Garden Club and was constructed by Jim Rivet of Jim Rivet Landscaping and Jim Saulnier of RedGables. Members planted the garden with donated perennials from their own gardens as well as donations from residents and local businesses. Money donated from local businesses was used towards the cost of construction of the garden. We are proud to say that the garden is fertilized by natural fertilizers and compost, as well as use of natural and organic weed control. Keep your eye out for spots around town that have been planted with spring bulbs. These spots include the Post Office, the Town Fire and Safety building, the Barrington Historical Society and the Barrington Elementary School. With more incoming donations, the group will use the funds towards future, smaller garden projects.

A sculpture contest will be held each spring for the next sculpture that will be highlighted in the garden. This year’s chosen artist is Werner Kanner of Hancock. His sculpture of three geese in flight is entitled “Migration” and is made of aluminum, brass and steel. The winner of the 2009 contest was Adam Pearson of Barrington for his artwork entitled "Tree."

In spring of 2009 the Barrington Bloomers was chosen as one of twenty communities to receive a 2008 Community Beautification Award from the New Hampshire Arborists Association. The annual award recognizes NH communities for their outstanding efforts for public landscape management and beautification.
