Meeting notes for April 15, 2009

Barrington Bloomers gathered at Michele's house for a pot luck. Great time was had by the 12 "bloomers" in attendance. Thank you Michele for a wonderful place to have our meeting. We also had a "show and tell" about our favorite garden item or idea. Some of the things brought were:
Muck boots, purchased from Red's Shoe barn
Gloves in Bottle- Rite Aid
TubTrug Flexible Multi use bucket, 3 sizes- Wentworth Greenhouse, Gardener's Supply, similar ones at Walmart
Japanese Weeder/ tiller
Joy of Gardening Book/ Vegetable Gardens

Looking for volunteers to help maintain the gardens at the public library as the funds were cut-out of the budget for this year. If you can donate a little time to cut back the decorative grasses, sedums, etc it would be appreciated. Please email Nancy if you have done any work in the garden so we know what has been done. I can then let Jenny, who created the garden, know what has been done-thanks! From Jenny Fales about current garden needs at the library: "Immediate tasks would be cutting back grasses and Russian sage to about 8" tall; and cutting any stems left over from last fall on sedums, black-eyed Susans, shasta daisies, coneflowers." Volunteers could also rake and bag any leaves in the garden area left over from last fall (most were done).

We have our sculpture picked for the town garden. The winner is Adam Pearson and his artwork entitled "Tree". (Adam can be cotacted at: APearsonSculptureWorks[at!]gmail.com. There will be an unveiling on Monday May 18th at 6:00pm. Raindate is Tuesday May 19th at 6:00pm. There will be town officials and donators for funding in attendance. Hope to see lots of bloomers there!!! Lindy is working on getting things together for this-- including music, cheese and crackers and refreshments. Please let Nancy know if we can expect you by the Friday before. We will need some time to set-up and tidy up the garden beforehand. Coleen could we use your "tent" in case of rain?

We will be meeting at Lindy's house on the 22nd of April to decoupage the donation pots we will be placing around the town. If you can help with these we will be meeting at 6:30pm at Long Marsh Rd. Bring glue guns, brushes, scissors, decorative napkins to tear up.

May 20th is the field trip to Merrymeeting Gardens in New Durham to learn about putting together a container garden. Bring up to 4 containers, a magazine picture of what you'd like to make, garden gloves and shovel. We will purchase soil and plants from Amanda Turner and she will take us through the steps to complete our container garden. We will also be making one large container plant for a silent auction at the Friends of the Library's Garden Sale in June. Lindy will bring a pot for this. If you are planning on attending and or carpooling please contact Nancy by May 13th. So far we have: Michele, Barb, JoAnn, Marilyn, Nancy, Lindy, Cindi and Karolina.

The Friends of the Library Plant Sale will be on June 6th in the town gym. Donations welcome, please drop them off on that Friday between 2-6pm. Be sure to label what they are, sun or shade, color and height. We will need volunteers for helping with the sale and also to help with the silent auction for the Barrington Bloomers. Let Nancy know if you can spend an hour or two by June 3.

June 17th we will have a field trip to ME. The Hamilton House in So. Berwick and also the Raitts Stone landscaping in Eliot.

July 15th will be a class for photographing flowers and gardens at Cyndi's Golden Meadows in Somersworth.

Dues are still being collected-- if you haven't paid for 2009 (Sept 1, 2008-Aug 31, 2009) please bring your dues to the next meeting/fieldtrip. $20 per member/family.

One last note if anyone can give some time to help trim lilacs behind the Barrington Town Garden this Saturday with Marilyn around 1:00pm it would be of great help to set the backdrop for our new garden.--Thanks Marilyn-- they look great!

Meeting Notes for March 18, 2009

Gardening at the waters edge & Water gardens
After having technical difficulties we had a quick video of gardening ideas and how utilizing natural substances right in your yard is better for the environment. Lauren answered questions from members, and did a wonderful job with the time she had. Thanks also to the library staff and Dave , Nancy's husband for coming to the rescue.

Merrymeeting Gardens is being moved to May 20th. We will be doing container gardening, bring up to four containers and we will purchase plants and soil from Amanda Turner. The homework assignment is to look for magazine ideas for container plants to bring with you for the meeting.

April 15th we will be having a pot luck at Michelle's house. Bring a dish and a favorite garden tip or tool to share with everyone. Time will be 6:30.

Town garden press release has gone out for finding an artist sculpture to be displayed for a year in the Town Garden. We will have an unveiling of the sculpture on May 17th.

Sign for garden is still in design. Donation pots: we will be having a Lindy arts and crafts meeting to decoupage the pots. To be announced.

We will be setting up for a silent auction at the library's plant sale on June 6th. It will be for a container planting from our field trip to Merrymeeting Gardens (hanging planter? or hypertufa?).

The NH arborist award voting will be in May.

That concludes our March meeting.
