Minutes by Kim Langevin, transcribed by Paula Roberge
The garden club met at the Town Library at 6:30 pm.
Nancy Kanner opened the meeting with a discussion about the upcoming months’ agendas. Next month we will have a spokesperson coming to talk with us from “Red Worms for a Green Earth”. Hopefully in April (or June) we will be hosting someone from the Strafford Garden Club who will teach us how to make hypertufa containers. We’ll be able to make one for ourselves, too, but the meeting will likely be held in Nancy’s garage due to the mess it will make.
Nancy and Coleen are going to look into some summer field trips for us. Nancy will contact a person to come and speak with us about invasive plants, and Lindy will speak to someone regarding talking to us about organic lawns. Lindy has confirmed a speaker for May 21st… Flower Arranging Demo, will take place at the Christmas Dove!
Plans are in progress for the Annual Plant Sale at the town gym (June 6- set-up, Sat. June 7- plant sale). Sponsored by the Friends of the Library, all proceeds go to the library. Donations of plants are always welcome and we may possibly be able to help with the sale… is there someone in the Friends group that could let us know how the Bloomers can help… thanks! Coleen brought up the possibility of our ordering more of the coniferous trees she bought last fall. They were exceptionally high quality and we think they would sell nicely at the sale. We, too, would donate our profits to the library.
It was mentioned that a banner with our logo would be nice for things like this. Paula Roberge is going to work on a plan for making something for us. Cyndi Cowland and AnnMarie Carl have also voiced interest in helping to make the banner. (Please contact each other, if you need phone #’s and emails please let me know). I will send the artwork to Paula and Cyndi.
Lindy is putting together a Town Garden Committee and plans to meet with Carol Reilly to see what the town might do to work with us. We’d like to plant a flower garden at the intersection of Routes 9 and 125, not only to bring awareness to the Bloomers, but also to improve an area that will eventually become a part of our new town center. The biggest obstacle will be providing water to the site on a regular basis, and we’ll be working on solutions to this issue.
Coleen and Nancy brought some tools that they use for starting plants from seed. They showed us various types of plant pots, trays and tubs that work well. Coleen and Nancy use a heat mat – ideal for keeping the tender seedlings at optimum temperature until they reach their ‘true leaves’ size. We also talked about the best time to begin the project so the plants don’t become leggy. They explained the (cautious) use of timed heat lamps, too, for light on the topside of the trays. Thanks to Nancy for typing up a cheat sheet for us on “Step by step seed starting”.
We adjourned at 8:00 pm and will meet again on March 19th at the library.
