Meeting Notes for October 15, 2008

The meeting started off with an update on the town garden, dues were collected and upcoming meetings were planned. Cindi H. volunteered to be the Secretary... thank you Cindi! At our September meeting an activity committee was started. The members are: Michelle L., Cyndi C., Heather C. and Nancy K. If you have any ideas for future presentations or field trips contact any one of those members. Refreshments were provided by Kim L. and enjoyed by all following the very interesting presentation on Bats by Tom Cowland of Golden Meadows Daylilies & Garden Design.
I never new there were so many types of bats... insect eating bats, nectar/fruit bats, leaf nose bats, fishing bats, carnivorous bats, pollen feeders and the famous vampire bats, these were just a few of the ones highlighted in Tom's slide presentation. He also talked about the benefit to gardens from bat guanno (bat poo) which is high in nitrates. Also mentioned was the use of bat houses and processes to safely remove (for you and the bats) them out of your house. There are around 6-8 species living in New England, mostly insect eating bats, and are best seen in open fields in the evening.
Our next meeting we will be meeting at Coleen's house/garage for wreath making! It will be on Wednessday, November 19 at 6;30 pm. Please email or call Coleen to let her know if you will be coming. Price for each member will be determined. Bring along gloves, clippers, decorations and bow making material. RSVP by Nov. 12. Snacks will be provided by Cindi H., Ann Marie F. and Coleen (mulled cider).
The December meeting will be a Holiday Gathering at Nancy's house on Wednesday, December 10 at 6:30 pm. We will hold a garden themed yankee swap (please keep the cost of the gift in the range of $10-12). So far we have refreshments provided by Kim L., Cyndi C., Michelle L., Coleen S., and Nancy K. If you would like to attend, please RSVP to Nancy via email or phone by December 3.
