March 2011
Hi Bloomers Welcome to spring,
let the fun begin
Our March meeting was held at the library. We had Karolina Bodner present a slide show of her Sustainable Harvest International trips to Belize. It's amazing the work they do to provide technical and emotional support to farming families in Central America. It's a win, win situation to help these families overcome poverty while restoring our planet's tropical forests. Karolina has been a volunteer since 1991,and clearly loves the families she has helped. She even took a year off to live there and learned from them as much as she taught to them. She is a large supporter of their local crafts and brings supplies such as beads for jewelry and embroidery on fabric. Karolina brought in samples of beautiful covered baskets that were for sale. Her slide show was very impressive and shows the many types of tropical plants from the area. Thank you so much, Karolina for a very interesting meeting.
Other items discussed in our business meeting were the sculpture for our town garden. It was mentioned that as incentive to attract more artisans would be to offer money with the possibility of a matching grant by local businesses. We loved the last two sculptures we had.
It was suggested that we involve the kids at school in a contest for a sculpture. Maybe even involve them with our garden cleanups. Karolina will head this up with entry forms and getting the school involved.
We are looking into maybe planting low maintenance plants at the triangle to Province Rd and Rte 9. First it will be determined whether the town will be changing that intersection, then if not we will make plans to plant
