GREETINGS FELLOW GROWERS!:
What a month!!! Had I entered some quantum driven worm hole? Did I spend Halloween weekend shoveling a foot of snow? And then, the following week, take a walk along the beach enjoying some 60+ degree sunny weather. The snow didn’t kill the remaining vegetables in the garden – kale, Swiss chad, beets, carrots, Brussels sprouts – but it did beat them down pretty badly. And for commercial growers, that meant lower sales potential for those all-important Farmers Markets during the Thanksgiving and Christmas season. Agriculture – You’ve got to love it!
Here at the Veggie Clinic, we’ve been very busy as usual. We’ve added more space to enlarge a couple of the growing systems. I have two of the large chambers in the PHOTOTRON filled with beautiful varieties of lettuce and various herbs. These have been very popular at the Farmers Markets. In a phrase – QUINTESSENTIALLY FRESH GREENS! As with the gourmet mushrooms, these fresh greens are available at any time here at the Castle. All you need to do is contact me through the newsletter.
I will tell you more details soon, but I can tell you that I have been contracted to develop the science and business plan for a very exciting urban growing program. After a very successful operational year in the PHOTORON, I have been approached by several groups interested in incorporating many of my design/operational components. I am eagerly looking forward to the challenge!
I have been busy giving lectures and seminars to various groups/clubs/organizations in and out of the area. Recently, I gave a talk for a large group from the Barrington Bloomers garden club. Fun, interactive, hands on. I look forward to their probable field trip to visit the PHOTOTRON in February. I have been contacted to give quite a few talks during the winter and early spring, so if you or your club/organization would like to schedule me, please get in touch so you can lock in the date you would like. Speaking of tours, this past week we hosted a great group of students from the Winnacunnet High School Science Club. We spent some engaging time talking about everything from the structural engineering of the Castle to the physics of the PHOTOTRON. A joy to host a group of such engaged and personable students. It gives me hope!
