Our last meeting was Wednesday April 21. Great presentation by Barrington resident, David “Dr. Tomato” O'Connor who spoke about growing tomatoes as well as other interesting garden topics and promoted the benefits of organic gardening. Check out his web site: www.healthyhomeharvest.com where you can sign up for his very informative newsletter. He sells some of his products at Blue Seal in Rochester, farmers markets and other locations.
The garden sculpture for this year was chosen--very easy as there was only one entry. My Dad, Werner Kanner of Hancock, is making a sculpture entitled "Migration". It will be 3 geese in flight. He will be installing it the day of our garden cleanup on Saturday the 15th which brings me to...
...the Town Flower Garden cleanup this Saturday May 15 at 9/9:30 am to about noontime. Please let me know if you can make it to help out. The more the merrier : ) email or 664.2747. We will have the sculpture unveiling at this time as well-- around noontime.
The May meeting, Wednesday the 19th, will be held at the Barrington town library as well, but will be starting at 6:00pm (note time!). Presentation on Invasive Plants in your Yard and Garden. An important note for all members of the Garden Club:
I, Nancy K, will be stepping down from my position as President as of our June meeting. I have been president since I started the group in 2007 and thought it was time to "mix it up" and let someone else continue as the president to help bring new ideas and energy to the group. Coleen, currently our vice-president, has agreed that she would like to take over the position... so that leaves the vice president spot open! We will officially vote sometime soon at one of the upcoming meetings for both positions. Please let me know if you would be interested in taking over as the vice-president. 664.2747

Business meeting:
_An email from the Rec Dept/Food Pantry sent to the Bloomers seeing if we, or anyone in the group may be interested in taking over this venture:
"To Barrington Bloomer Members:
My name is Beth Watson and I am the Assistant Recreation Director here in Barrington. For the past 4 years we have planted a Food Pantry Garden in hopes of providing fresh vegetables to those struggling to put healthy food on the table. It has been highly successful and we have provided a variety of squashes, potatoes, tomatoes, green beans, lettuce, string beans, and beets for families within our community.
Unfortunately there is never enough time in the day to maintain the garden appropriately and to find volunteers to keep up on the weeding and the general maintenance.
Are there any members of your organization that would like to take over this endeavor? All materials, seeds and seedlings are still to be purchased by the REC. No monies will be required from the volunteers willing to oversee this project.
I myself have been the "gardener" for the past 2 years and I have found that I just can't put into it what is required in order to have it again this year.
If anyone is willing to take over this project, I would love to hear from you. I can be reached in the office at 664-5224, usually every afternoon until 4:00.
Thank you, Beth Watson"
_Organize the plans for the town garden's upcoming season-- Maintaining the town garden and a few other areas where we have planted, but mainly keeping the garden looking great for this summer season ahead. We will have sign-ups for weekly cleanup from June- August and bi-weekly from late Aug- Sept/Oct. The spring group cleanup is May 15, Saturday from 9:00am-12:00pm, please come and join us as this is truely a case of "the more the merrier". The sculpture will be added to the garden as well. There will be a group cleanup on November 7, a Sunday 1:00.
_The date for the library garden cleanup is May 22 from 9-12 and we will also go to the Historical Sociaty, post office, and the fire/police. The library is also in need of volunteers to help with the garden, attached is the schedule from Amy for what needs to be done, please contact her directly if you have some time to spend at the library garden. 664-0193
_Donation pots need to be put out (new lids for this year?).
_The schedule sign-up for garden maintenance at the town garden will be sent around via email shortly (I will have a copy of it at this meeting).
_As a group using the library as our meeting place I thought it would be nice if we donated a gardening related book to the library as a thank you. Amy mentioned some books that she would like. If you have any that you would recommend bring your ideas to the next meeting or email me.
_The Friends of the Library will be holding their annual plant sale on Saturday June 5 at the town gym--postcards will be going out in the mail shortly. Plant donations will be accepted on Friday June 4 after 2pm at the town gym. If you would like to spend an hour or two a the library on the day of the sale please let me know. The group has been present the last couple of years to help out with plant id, questions and to promote the Bloomers.
_and so much more!
Happy Gardening!
